Alaska Pictures of the Day #3

Glacier - I believe this is the Spencer Galcier. I saw this view on the train between Anchorage and Seward, the only training I did. I would highly recommend taking the Alaska Railroad, if only for a short trip. I can't imaging the scenery could be any better than what I saw on this ride. It's a slow pace, almost four hours for this section. The travel is totally tourist with the train slowing for scenery, and, for impressive views, it even comes to a complete stop. I was early as far as tourist season. I rode in the last car and there were only two other people in that car with me. You can stand on the platform at the end of the last car for clearer photos. That platform was also enjoyed throughout the trip by the entire fifth grade class from Larson Elementary traveling to Seward to do an overnight at the SeaLife Center. The kids were pretty excited that they were going to get to camp inside the facility, I'm not sure the chaperones were.

Dew Line - These antennae are remnants of the early part of the Cold War. Used as relays, these low frequency towers were used for communcations along the Distant Early Warning(DEW) Line. All of the electronics have been removed. The shells of the towers here on top of Anvil Mountain can easily be seen from Nome. Like many other hulks, machinery that is no longer usable is simply left where it was last used. The cold acts to preserve it and throughout the area one runs into many, many outdoor musuem pieces.
