Alaska Pictures of the Day #4

Race Point - the high point in the upper right of this image is referred to as Race Point. It's the focus of the annual Mt. Marathon run held every 4th of July. Racers start at the bottom, run up to Race Point(3022') and return. The record holder did it in less than 44 minutes. I'm guessing a lot of the return trip was done on his back side. Most folks who are up for a hike choose the jeep trail, that's somewhat visible in the lower left and that's how I got to this point. This trail winds around to the right and then up the broken rock and stone to Race Point via Marathon Bowl. The body of water is Resurrection Bay and Seward is off to the left.

Marathon Bowl - I was running out of time when I got to Marathon Bowl and passed on going up the steep loose stone and snow to Race Point(that's off to my right in this image). The peak behind me(not the highest one) is Mt. Marathon(4603'). Since the trail head is close to sea level, you gain a fair amount of altitude on this walk. I'll go for Race Point next time. Yes, walking, not running.
